The incident occurred following completion of a drilling operation, in connection with equipment handling during the retrieval of a riser.

One person was injured during the incident. The person is reported to have had their legs trapped between items of equipment installed on the drill floor (riser spider and catwalk). The injured person was transported onshore in an SAR helicopter for medical treatment.

Scarabeo 8 is operated by Saipem Norge AS and was under contract to Aker BP when the incident occurred.

Investigation

Havtil takes a serious view of this incident and has decided to launch an investigation. A team of our specialists is now starting work.

The primary objective of the investigation is to identify the causes of the incident and any lessons that can be learned, as well as to share relevant information with the industry.

The investigation will include:

  • clarifying the course of events and scope of the incident
  • assessing its actual and potential consequences
  • assessing its direct and underlying causes
  • identifying nonconformities and items for improvement with reference to regulations
  • assessing the facility operator’s own investigation
  • applying the enforcement measures necessary to remedy any regulatory breaches
  • making the findings public
  • promoting experience transfer and learning by other actors in the petroleum sector.
